Big Tex
The State Fair of Texas is an annual state fair held at historic Fair Park, a complex recognized for its beautiful landscaping and unique collection of art deco architecture. The fair has taken place every year since 1886 except for varying periods during World War I and World War II. It usually begins the last Friday in September and ends 24 days later. Founded in Dallas in 1886 by a group of civic leaders who wanted to focus attention on their young city’s accomplishments and prospects, the State Fair of Texas has consistently offered its visitors a first look at the newest and best in products and performances. Many national corporations and local businesses participate in the Fair as sponsors and exhibitors. BIG TEX Big Tex, a 55-foot tall cowboy, has been its symbol since his introduction in 1952. In 1953, Big Tex's jaw was hinged, so that he appears to "speak" the announcements that promote fair events. Big Tex has served as a cultural ambassador to visitors, and the statue's prime location in the fairgrounds serves as a traditional meeting point. After a fire on October 19, 2012 destroyed the original Big Tex, he was rebuilt and reintroduced for the 2013 fair.
