First Baptist Church of Dallas
The First Baptist Church of Dallas is the only downtown Dallas church on its original site was established in 1868. Today it is a Southern Baptist megachurch located in Downtown. The church, considered influential among evangelical Christians in the United States, also owns and operates a school, a college, several radio stations, and Dallas Life, a mission for the homeless on the southern edge of Downtown. The current pastor is Robert Jeffress. Dr. Jeffress is currently leading the congregation in a $130 million campaign to re-create its downtown campus. The project is the largest in modern church history. The old sanctuary remains and will continue to be used for weddings and funerals. New campus From the outside, the five-block church campus around Akard and San Jacinto streets is a spectacle of steel and glass, with touches of red brick and stained glass tying the two spaces together. Inside the new worship center, a mile of pews can seat 3,000 people in the 178,000-square-foot worship center. Colored LED lighting, and a 142-foot video screen, will enhance the mood of the service. The orchestra platform can be raised at will and the choir screen retracted.
